West Duluth slides
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of 127 slides on the history and development of West Duluth, including reproduced historic images and views from the 1980s likely photographed by Robert VanKleek. Included are: businesses, the Civic Center, the Oneota neighborhood, schools, hotels, stores, houses, churches, and buildings in West Duluth. The color slides are in good condition.
These slides may have been used to illustrate public presentations by VanKleek on the history of West Duluth. The text of his speech to the St. Louis County Historical Society "A Brief History of the Early Years in West Duluth (1855-1895)" is held in the essay collection.

Biographical / Historical
Robert VanKleek (1905 May 1-1987 June 6) was the son of Abigale and John VanKleek who lived at 5211 Wadena, the West Duluth neighborhood, when Robert graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minnesota in 1925. He earned his B.Ed. degree from Superior State College and his M. A. at the University of Minnesota.
Robert VanKleek was a teacher and guidance counselor at Duluth's Central High School followed by service as Duluth Denfeld High Schoo'sl principal from 1963 to 1970. He and his spouse, Aileen VanKleek, resided at 4101 West 6th Street. He was associated with the Board of Education in 1971, and was the pastor of Duluth’s Central Avenue Methodist Church in 1973. Mr. VanKleek died in Duluth.
