Scope and Contents

The collection contains photocopies of musical scores. Most of the scores are copies of unpublished music written by Joseph Braverman. The collection also contains copies of three published scores by other composers, dated 1927 and 1931. Vocal texts in all the pieces are in Hebrew.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Braverman came to the United States from Odessa, Russia and served as a cantor in New York City before moving to Duluth, Minnesota. He was a teacher in Duluth's Talmud Torah school and was a cantor for 40 years in Tifereth Israel and Adas Israel Synagogues.

Braverman was a composer of Jewish songs, many of which were sung by the 60-voice Hazomir Choral Society which he helped to organize in the 1930s. He composed over 80 pieces of music. Braverman died in New York where he had moved late in life to live with his son, Samuel.
