Biographical / Historical

Ethel Lindberg Nelson (April 21, 1908 - May 14, 2006) graduated from Duluth Central High school in 1927 and took teacher training at Duluth State Teacher's College from 1927-1929. When she graduated in 1929, she received both a diploma and a life certificate to teach in the State of Minnesota. She then taught upper elementary grades (4-8) in the St. Louis County Unorganized District from 1929-1937 until she married. At that time, married women could not be public school teachers.

Ethel Lindberg served at several schools: Cook, Alango, Greaney, and Homecroft. She stayed in teacherages where she was the custodian and cook as well as teacher. Supervision of teachers was strict and rigorous at that time; supervisors would appear unannounced and rate both the teaching lesson plans and their implementation. In 1957, Mrs. Nelson re-entered the teaching field, serving as both teacher and principal at Fredenberg Elementary School until her retirement in 1972.
