Scope and Contents
The collection consists of cabinet cards and unmounted, primarily, albumen prints stamped with Newton's name or his advertisement. It is assumed he made the photographs. The prints are grouped by subject: mining; Ojibwe people; Duluth; lake and vessels; northeastern Minnesota views; logging.

Biographical / Historical
George Newton is listed in the Polk Duluth City Directories of 1889-1895, as a landscape photographer and artist living in Lester Park of Duluth. In 1896, the entry indicates he was a janitor at the Lester Park School. It also notes that in 1899 he relocated back to Brainerd, Minnesota where he lived in 1888 and listed in city directories as "artist".
