Content Description

The collection contains two WWII scrapbooks titled "Service Record of Erwin L. Goldfine, U.S. Army, Vols. 1 and 2," which were compiled by Erwin's brother Monnie. Erwin Goldfine enlisted in the Army Air Corp in December of 1942, and served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. His family in Duluth was active in the Temple Israel congregation, and several of Goldfine’s letters home were published in the local periodical Jewish Fellowship News. Scrapbooks contain correspondence, photographs, articles from Jewish Fellowship News, and ephemera.

Also included are loose photographs of the Goldfine family.

Biographical / Historical

Erwin Goldfine was a member of the Goldfine family of Duluth, Minnesota. His family opened and operated the Goldfine Trading Post, later Goldfine's by the Bridge. Erwin and his brother Manley together ran the family business, which closed in the late 1970s. Following that closure they formed Zenith Management Company, which, as ZMC Hotels eventually operated 40 hospitality businesses in 18 states.

Erwin Goldfine chaired a committee that raised funds to establish a medical school at the Unviersity of Minnesota Duluth. He was a chair of the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Committee and served as a University of Minnesota regent from 1975 to 1987. Goldfine was active in the Minnesota DFL party, Temple Israel, and numerous community organizations. Erwin Goldfine was married to Beverly Betten Goldfine.
