Biographical / Historical
In November 1989, the UMD Diversity Task Force was organized at the request of Chancellor Lawrence Ianni. Judith Kaplan, Director of Affermative Action and Personnel, was asked to convene the committee. In 1992, it was re-named the Human Diversity Task Force, and the chair was Dr. Joyce Kramer. Constituents included various colleges, student support offices, student groups, and others. In April 1993, the task force held the first UMD Diversity Forum. In the 1993-1994 academic year, the task force was renamed the Commission on Human Diversity, under co-chairs Mary Cameron and Susana Pelayo-Woodward. After a period of inactivity in 1999-2001, the Commission continued to bring speakers to campus and organize activities as part of Diversity Week.
