Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a variety of materials related to the Duluth Public Schools, collected by the Historic Old Central High School Museum Committee. The Museum Committee maintained an 1890s classrrom museum in the Old Central High School administration building, and conducted tours of the museum and belltower for alumni and others. Many items in this collection were donated to the museum by alumni of Duluth schools. The bulk of the materials are related to Central High School, but many other schools are represented. Included in the collection are scrapbooks, photographs, school reunion materals, engineering drawings for Central High School, newsletters and other school publications, and other miscellaneous documents.

Biographical / Historical

Duluth Central High School is an architectural landmark in Duluth which was saved from the wrecking ball by community effort. The school is located at Lake Avenue and Second Street, was built in 1891-92, by Duluth architects Palmer and Hall but based on Henry H. Richardson’s work described as Romanesque. A massive sandstone structure with a 230 foot tower, the building is now on the National Register of Historic Places and functioning as the administration building for the Duluth Board of Education.
