Biographical / Historical

Ely Elementary School was constructed in 1906 and West 6th Street and Central Avenue, and named after Reverend Edmund Ely. In 1926, when a new Denfeld High School building opened, the former Denfeld High School at 725 Central Avenue North (right next to Ely Elementary) was repurposed as West Junior High School. Laura MacArthur became the principal of both schools.

Ely Elementary closed in 1956 and was replaced by Laura MacArthur Elementary in 1957. In 1983, West Junior High became the west wing of Laura MacArthur School. Both schools were demolished in 2011 and a new Laura MacArthur Elementary School was constructed.
