Biographical / Historical

Jergen J. Fuhr (31 May 1876-20 February 1930) was born in Throndenes Nordland Norway. At age 15 he was an actor in Oslo and later a reporter of the Oslo daily Verna Gang. He came to the United States in 1905 and to Duluth in 1914 where he accepted a job as a newspaper reporter. He purchased the Duluth Skandinav weekly Norwegian language newspaper in 1917 from Charles Lindbergh. He also owned the Grand Forks, North Dakota Grand Forks Skandinav, the Superior, Wisconsin, Tidende, the Dominion Skandinav (Winnipeg) and the Dansk-Canadieren (Winnipeg). Fuhr married Anna Dahl of Chicago in Minneapolis in 1924. Fuhr died unexpectedly while traveling in Canada at age 54. At the time of his death, Fuhr had a daughter, Liv Fuhr, by Anna’s previous marriage, and a two-year-old son, Jergen. Fuhr Publishing & Printing Company (publishers, printers, and binders) was in downtown Duluth and continued by Anna and Jergen for decades. Jergen J. Fuhr is buried in Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
