Content Description
The collection contains an oral history project conducted by Mari Trine in 2003 and 2006, in which she interviewed sixteen women living and working in rural Minnesota. The title of the project is "Oral Histories of Rural Minnesota: Women's Stories of Living on the Land." Included in this collection are oral history tapes, release forms, notes, research, and project descriptions, as well as transcripts for some of the interviews.
The collection also includes: correspondence related to Trine's grievance process after being denied tenure at the College of St. Scholastica; notes for a presentation by Trine to the St. Louis County Health and Human Services Conference about the lynchings of Isaac McGhie, Elmer Jackson and Elias Clayton; materials from Saint Mary's Duluth Clinic Behavioral Health Cultural Competence Training series, including a presentation by Trine for SMDC/Essentia Behavioral Health staff; and Duluth ephemera.

Biographical / Historical
Mari Trine (PhD, MSW), was born on March 22, 1964. Her professional career in Duluth has included working as an Instructor in the Department of History at the University of Minnesota Duluth, an Assistant Professor of History at the College of St. Scholastica, a social worker at PAVSA, and a LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Her undergraduate college history courses had a focus on using primary sources and oral history methods in research. The courses included History of Civil Rights Movements: Recent America; Women in United States History I and II; African American History II.
Trine publicly came out as a lesbian at a Duluth City Council Hearing in August 2001, while she was employed at St. Scholastica. She was denied tenure in 2006, for reasons she alleged to be discriminatory.
