Language of Materials
The collection contains the papers of John H. Darling. John Henry Darling was born on april 15, 1847 at Lake Ridge Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1873. He worked as a government engineer on navigation projects. Darling took the position of principal U.S. assistant Engineer in Duluth in 1884. He remained employed in Duluth until his retirement in 1913. Darling was interested in astronomy, and in 1917 he designed and built an observatory at 910 West Third Street in Duluth. The observatory was given to the city of Duluth upon his death in 1942. The facility was given to the University of Minnesota a few years later. The collection contains a variety of materials including diaries, notes, printed matter, and artifacts.
