Biographical / Historical

Morgan Park: Duluth, U.S. Steel, and the Forging of a Company Town relates the story of U.S. Steel’s plant in Duluth, and follows the story of the company town and its residents from the boom years to the closing of the facility and up to the mid-2000s.

Arnold Alanen is an emeritus professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1974-2009 he taught courses in landscape history and cultural resource preservation. He is a prolific writer, and the author of Morgan Park: Duluth, U.S. Steel, and the Forging of a Company Town (2007); Finns in Minnesota (2012); a co-edited book, Preserving Cultural Landscapes in America (2000); and a co-authored book, Main Street Ready-Made: The New Deal Community of Greendale, Wisconsin (1987). He helped to found the periodical Landscape Journal in the early 1980s, and served as co-editor until 1991; he also is the founder and editor of the Wisconsin Land and Life series, published by the University of Wisconsin Press since 2005. Dr. Alanen has received many awards and honors, including: seven national research and communication awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, and an honorary membership to ASLA in 2008; five recognitions from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, their Outstanding Educator Award in 2001, and election to its Academy of Fellows in 2007; a Fulbright Graduate Fellow; a W.K. Kellogg Foundation National Fellow; a visiting research professor at the University of Helsinki, Finland; and the Finlandia Foundation’s National Lecturer of the Year.
