Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials related to the Rajender Claim against the University of Minnesota from the papers of Margaret V. Grevatt which are dated between 1977 and 1982. Ravender v. University of Minnesota (1982) was a landmark class action sexual discrimination lawsuit filed on September 5, 1973 by Professor Shyamala Rajender. Rajender, an assistant professor of chemistry at the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota, filed suit after being denied a tenure-track position. The members of the search committee had evidently left notes in her appolication file which were discriminatory against Rajender's sex and national origin. The case was certified as a class action lawsuit by the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota on February 13, 1978 and was settled in 1980 by a consent decree. In his decision on the case, Judge Miles Lord enjoined the university from discriminating against women on the basis of sex.
