Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Description
According to its mission statement, the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, "creates and implements student programs and services that develop student potential and extend UMM's liberal arts mission beyond the classroom." Today a number of different offices operate under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and these include the Career Center, Health Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, Multi-Ethnic Student Program, Residential Life, Student Activities and Counseling. Together these offices function to promote the physical and emotional health of UMM students, to encourage engagement and foster a healthy, open and accepting community and to assist in the "recruitment and retention of a diverse student body."
The Vice Chancellor's papers are organized in five separate record series: Accreditation, ACT Research Service Reports, Committees, Institutional Research, and General Files and Correspondence. The latter series has been sub-divided (see the Repository Processing note for "General Files and Correspondence," A2-E)) into eight sub-series. These include Academics, Administrative, Facilities, Miscellaneous, Grants, Planning, Students, and Budget. The abstracts for specific record series and sub-series should be consulted for a more detailed description of the materials.

History of the Office of Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs
The Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs assumed its present form in 1987. In that year Gary McGrath was named Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs, replacing Stephen Granger, who had served under the title of "Assistant Provost for Student Affairs." Granger had served UMM since 1960 and was originally listed as a counselor. But he had also in the early years served on the provost's "Administrative Committee." Herbert Croom, who had worked as principal at the WCSA and then briefly as superintendent, was the original "Director of Student Services" and seemed to have performed many of the functions later assigned to the Vice-Chancellor. Croom remained in that position until 1969. Granger assumed the title of Assistant Provost under Jack (John Q.) Imholte in 1969 and assumed many of the responsibilities previously exercised by Croom. McGrath, who as noted above replaced Granger, served until 2000 when he was replaced by Sandra K. Olson Loy.
