Scope and Content Note

International advertising, 1949-1965 are both loose (1949-1957), and in binders (1958-1965), and include advertisements used in many countries. The languages used include: Arabic, Danish, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Spanish.

Direct mail advertising, 1907-1970 samples are in binders, and includes many brochures as well as some early manuals for adding machines.

Advertising Scrapbooks, 1904-1986 are samples of national print advertisement which have been put in scrapbooks. There are also a few folders of loose items boxed with the scrapbooks and additional advertisements in the map case in the CBI office suite.

Note: Many of these old binders used glue to hold the pages in. Most of the booklets and brochures inside seem in fairly good condition, but many of the bindings are breaking or broken.

Historical Note

Burroughs Corporation advertised from almost the very beginning of their business, when they only had one product (the Burroughs Registering Accountant). These advertisements cover many decades and often reflect many of the societal attitudes of the time.
