Scope and Content Note

The collection includes correspondence, conference proceedings, meeting minutes, memoranda, sketches, newsletters, and policy manuals largely relating to the origin and organization of the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) and allied professional groups. The collection includes information about the AFIPS education committee, early Joint Computer Conferences, the Harry Goode Memorial Award, the AFIPS constitution and logo, and the computer-related activities of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Radio Engineers and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Correspondents of note include: Ruben A. Imm, Keith W. Uncapher, and Willis H. Ware.

Biographical Note

Claude A. R. Kagan received a B.M.E., B.E.E. (1949) and M.S. (1950) from Cornell University, after which he was employed by Ebasco Services. In 1953 he joined the Western Electric Company in Lawrence, Massachusetts. At Western's Engineering Research Center in Princeton he worked on a computer system technology and high-level language development.

Long interested in the use of computers in engineering and communication, he was active in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers' computing devices and data communications committees. He became vice-chairman of the American Institute of Electrical Engineer's (AIEE) Computing Devices Committee in 1959 and chairman in 1960. He held that position throughout the formation of the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) in 1962. He also chaired several AFIPS committees and served on the board of the National Joint Computer Conference (NJCC).
