The collection contains a series of six volumes published by IBM as a result of the company's study in the early 1970s on computer security. Missing from the collection is volume 3, part 1.

The Charles Babbage Institute holds the copyright to all materials in the collection, except for items covered by a prior copyright (such as published materials). Researchers may quote from the collection under the fair use provisions of the copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code).
In the early 1970s, IBM did a landmark study of computer security. As a result, the company published a set of manuals under the series name "Data Security and Data Processing." The series of manuals came to be known unofficially as the Rainbow Series.
