Biographical / Historical
Rey E. de la Cruz was born in 1954 in the Phillippines and spent his childhood in the town of Ballesteros, before moving to Quezon City when he was ten. He earned a degree from the University of the Philippines, before graduating with an MA in Communication and Theater in 1982 and an MEd in Special Education in 1988, from the University of Chicago, and earning his doctorate in Special Education from Illinois State University in 1995. He spent his career teaching in the Chicago area. His 2016 picture book Ballesteros on My Mind, was written about de la Cruz's childhood in the Philippines, and was published in English, Spanish, Taglog, and Ilocano. His bilingual English and Tagalog picture book, Cecile Guidote Alvarez: The Philippines Is a Stage was published in 2022. He lives in Glenview, Illinois.
