Scope and Contents

This collection contains manuscript materials for numerous titles, both published and unpublished, by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, some of which were published under her pseudonym Tamara Kitt. Materials are dated between 1943 and 1999 and include correspondence, holographs (manuscripts), typescripts, corrected typescripts, clippings, research, notes, page proofs, publisher's catalogues, and reviews. There is also a small number of drawings, including two by illustrator Brinton Turkle for her picture book A Special Birthday Party for Someone Very Special.

Biographical / Historical

Beatrice Schenk de Regniers was born in Lafayette, Indiana on August 16, 1914. She studied social work administration at the University of Chicago and earned her M.Ed in 1941 from Winnetka Graduate Teacher's College. During the 1940s she was sent to the Sinai Peninsula to a Yugoslav refugee camp, constructing a kindergarten and teaching American folk dances to the children. During the 1950s she began writing for children; in 1953 her first book, The Giant Story, was published, illustrated by Maurice Sendak. In 1961 she became the first editor of Scholastic Books 'Lucky Book Club,' and retired twenty years later to begin writing for the theater. Her first production appeared in 1986, based on her book Everyone Is Good for Something. She published over fifty books, including a number of titles under her pseudonym Tamara Kitt (Tammy and Mara were her cats' names). She died March 1, 2000 at her home in Washington.
