Biographical / Historical

Author and translator Erik Christian Haugaard was born April 13, 1923 in Frederiksberg, Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1940 after fleeing the Nazi invasion of Denmark, and eventually served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. His first book for young adults, Hakon of Rogen's Saga, was published in 1963 and was a recipient of an American Library Association (ALA) Notable Book Award. He also received recognition for his 1978 translation of The Complete Fairy Tales and Storiesof Hans Christian Andersen. In 1949 Haugaard married Myrna Seld; they eventually had two children and lived in Denmark and Ireland. Haugaard died in 2009.
