Scope and Contents

The Ted Rand papers contains written and illustrative production material related to two dozen children's books illustrated by Rand. Material includes studies and sketches, dummies, final illustrations in a variety of mediums, typescripts, proofs, research, correspondence, and notes.

Biographical / Historical

Ted Rand was born in 1916 in Seattle, Washington. After serving as a naval aviator during World War II he briefly attended the cornish College of the arts. He worked as a graphic artist for many years, as well as creating fine art landscapes and portraits. He began illustrating children's books in the 1980s after an invitation from the author Bill Martin, Jr. to collaborate. Prior to his death, he illsutrated nearly 80 books, several written by his wife, Gloria Rand. Ted Rand died in 2005 on Mercer Island, Washington.
