Biographical / Historical
Barbara Juster Esbensen (1925-1996), was born in Madison, WI, and received her B.S. in Art Education from the university there in 1947. She taught in Wisconsin, the Eastern Caroline Islands in the Pacific, Eureka, CA, and at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, before becoming a creative arts consultant at that college. Ms. Esbensen's work can be roughly divided into three areas: collections of poetry, retold tales, and books about animals. Ms. Esbensen received the 1988 Minnesota Book Award for her retelling of the Ojibway folktale, The Star Maiden. In 2002 she was given the Kerlan Award posthumously for her achivements in the creation of children's literature and in appreciation of her generous contribution of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection.
