Biographical Sketch

Mildred Pitts Walter was born September 8, 1922 in Sweetville, Louisiana. In 1944, she received a B. A. from Southern University and later moved to California. She worked as a schoolteacher and as a civil rights activist. In 1969, she published her first book Lillie of Watts: A Birthday Discovery. In 1982, she published The Girl on the Outsidea young adult novel based on the Little Rock school integration crisis of the 1950s. She received the Coretta Scott King Award for Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World(1986) in 1987 and an honorable mention for the Award in 1986 for Trouble's Child(1985).
