Biographical / Historical

Mildred L. Batchelder (1901-1998) worked for the American Library Association from 1936 to 1966 and was a former director of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). Batchelder encouraged and promoted the translation of the world's best children's literature. The Mildred Batchelder Award was established by ALSC in 1966 in her honor, and "is awarded to an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originating in a country other than the United States and in a language other than English and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States during the preceding year."
