Biographical / Historical
John Beatty was born in 1922 in Portland, OR. He received his BA at Reed College in 1943, after which he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he earned his MA at Stanford University in 1947 and his Phd at the University of Wahington in 1953. In 1950 Beatty married Patricia Robbins, with whom he authored several children's books. In addition to his writing career, John Beatty was a professor of history at the University of California Riverside until is death in 1975.
Patricia Beatty was born Patricia Robbins in Portland, OR in 1922. She received he BA at Reed College in 1944. She pursued graduate studies at the University of Idaho and at University of Wahington. She was a teacher, librarian and children's book author. She established the John and Patricia Beatty Award through the California Library Association for encouraging the writing of children's books about the culture and heritage of California. She died in Riverside, California in 1991.
