Biographical / Historical

Virginia Campbell was an American actress, artist, and illustrator. She was born in Louisiana in 1914 to Jacob Horstenstein and Carrie Schwing. She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1934, after which she worked on Broadway and in Hollywood, where Campbell appeared in several films, including Unconquered, directed by Cecil B. DeMille. After marrying writer John Becker, she retired from acting and moved to Europe, where she lived in Rome and London. Campbell began painting, using a variety of mediums, and also illustrated two children's books, New Feathers for the Old Goose and Near-Tragedy at the Winterfall, both written by her husband. Campbell died February 17th, 2016 in London.
