Biographical / Historical
Claire Huchet Bishop was bron in Geneva, Switzerland circa 1899, attended the Sorbonne in Paris, and in 1924 she started the first children's library in France, L'Heure Joyeuse. She eventually emigrated to the United States, working as a political activist, librarian, and author. Her children's books earned two Newbery runners-up. She was also an opponent of anti-Semitism. Bishop died in 1993.
