Scope and Contents

This collection consists of manuscript materials and art related to children's books that were either written, illustrated, or both by Betsy Bowen. The manuscript materials include typescript and corrected typescripts, correspondence, notes and storyboards, dummies, research, page proofs, and related items. The original art materials include drawings, watercolors, woodblock prints, and the actual woodblocks used to create the prints. The One North Star materials contains work by collaborator Beckie Prange, who co-illustrated the book with Bowen.

Biographical / Historical

Betsy Bowen is an illustrator, woodcut artist and author of children's and young adult books. Her woodcut prints and books appear in galleries throughout the country. Bowen's first children's book, Antler, Bear, Canoe: A Northwoods Alphabet Year, was published in 1991. A number of her books draw from her experience living on the North Shore of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota. Bowen runs an art studio and gallery in an old playhouse in Grand Marais, Minnesota; her website can be found at
