Biographical / Historical
Lois Ehlert was born November 9, 1934, in Beaver Dam, WI. She graduated from the Layton School of Art in 1957 and received a B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1959. She is known for her collage artwork which features colored paper and non-traditional materials such as found objects, buttons, and textiles. Initially providing illustrations for the books of others, Ehlert began writing her own material to accompany her artwork in the mid-1980s. She created books on subjects such as birds, flowers, weather, work, retellings of folk tales, and the alphabet. Ehlert died in Wisconsin in 2021.
