Biographical / Historical

Alex Winkler Bealer III was born in 1921 in Valdosta, GA. He received his BA at Emory University in 1942. He did graduate work at Northwestern University in 1946. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1942-1945 and 1950-1952. He was a blacksmith, woodworker, advertising executive and author of books for both children and adults. Although he was not Native, Bealer's books for children primarly focused on Native American tribes, including the Dakota (The Picture-Skin Story) and Cherokee (Only the Names Remain). Most of his other writings focused on blacksmithing and woodworking. Bealer died in Atlanta, GA in 1980.
