Biographical Sketch

Stephen Gammell was born February 10, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa. His main career has been as an illustrator of books for children, though he has also written a small number of self-illustrated books for children. Critics have said that his writing tends to serve his illustrations, rather than the other way around. His illustrations have won him numerous awards and honors, including a Caldecott Honor in 1982 for Where the Buffaloes Begin, and a Caldecott Medal in 1989 for Song and Dance Man.
