Biographical / Historical

Frances Lichten was born in Bellefonte, PA in 1889 and studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She worked as a commercial artists and as State Supervisor for the "Index of American Design" beginning in 1936 where she supervised artists documenting American folk art, and she wrote several books on Pennsylvania folk art. Beginning in 1955 she worked as a Research Associate in the Decorative Arts at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and also worked at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as an archivst. She died in 1961.
