Biographical / Historical
Pat Cummings was born on November 9, 1950 in Chicago, IL. Her father's career with the military involved constant moving, so she spent her childhood growing up in Germany, Japan, and U.S. states such as New York, Virginia, and Kansas. She attended Spelman College and the Atlanta School of Art between 1970 and 1972. Cummings is a freelance author and illustrator and has worked at various art museums across the United States. Her work has won many awards, including the 1984 Coretta Scott King Award for My Mama Needs Me.
