Biographical / Historical
Jean Craighead George was born July 2, 1919, in Washington, D.C. She attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating with a B.A. in 1941. She married John L. George, with whom she had three children, and also collaborated with him on several books. She published her first book, Vulpes, the Red Fox, in 1948, written with John George. Throughout her prolific career, she wrote both fiction and non-fiction for children and young adults, frequently incorporating scientific and ecological themes into her writing. She received a Newbery Honor in 1960 for My Side of the Mountain, a Newbery Medal in 1973 for Julie of the Wolves, and the Kerlan Award in 1982. She died in May 2012 at age 92.
