Biographical / Historical

James Cross Giblin, award-winning nonfiction children’s author and editor, was born July 8, 1933. Giblin began his career in children’s books editing and publishing with Clarion and later Houghton Mifflin. In 1989 he began writing full time and was the author of children and young adult books, many of which received awards and honors. He wrote When Plague Strikes: The Black Death, Smallpox, and AIDs published in 1995. Throughout his personal collection of notebooks and personal correspondence, Giblin reveals that he was sexually and romantically involved with men and also maintained friendships with other gay women and men such Gary W. Bargar and Ron Wegen who later died of AIDs. Giblin’s book, When Plague Strikes, is dedicated to their memory. As an author, Giblin wrote more than twenty nonfiction books for young readers.
