Scope and Contents

The collection primarily contains material related to creation of book The Three Trolls by Mabel Farmer, which was unpublished in her lifetime but was published by her son, Edward Farmer, in 2016. The Mabel M. Farmer Papers also hold a small amount of material for another unpublished title, Have You Seen Me in Your Garden?, a diary, and photocopies of miscellaneous woodcarvings.

Biographical / Historical

Mabel Ferris McKibbin was born in Portland, OR, March 28, 1903. She attended Reed College before transferring to Stanford University, where she received a BA and MA in Graphic Art. She married Edward McNeil Farmer (1901-1969), who was a professor of Art at Stanford for 40 years and a landscape painter. They had three children: Andrew (1903-2016), Mark (1933-2009), and Edward (1935-), a professor of history at the University of Minnesota.

Mabel and her husband trained at the Art Students League in New York City in 1929 and 1930, before returning to California and settling in Palo Alto. She taught art at Castilleja School for Girls in Palo Alto, and Palo Alto High School. She died March 29, 1956.
