Biographical / Historical

Lou Bellamy is an American stage director, producer, actor, entrepreneur and education. He's the founder, as well as the artistic director of Penumbra Theater Company, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He taught at the University of Minnesota from 1979 until his retirement as a professor in 2011.

Bellamy was born on March 10th, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Saint. Paul Central High School in 1962. Bellamy and his wife Coleen, are the parents of two, Sarah and Lucas. At the University of Minnesota, Bellamy taught classes in acting, directing, communication, as well as Black theater. His productions include 39 world premeieres. Bellamy's directing has earned him an Obie award for his production of 'Two Trains Running'. In 2005 he was awarded the IVEY Lifetime Acheivement Award, was named Distinguished Artist in 2006 and won the Kay Sexton award in 2027. In 2014 his daughter, Sarah Bellamy succeeded him as leader of Penumbra. Bellamy then served as emeritus artistic director.

Aside from directing plays at the Penumbra Theater Company, Bellamy has also directed at Arizona Theater Company, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Signature Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Cleveland Play House, Indiana Repertory Theater, The Gutherie Theater, The Kennedy Center, and Hartford Stage Company.
