HISTORICAL SKETCH

Walter Alt's father came from the village of Ilmajoki, Finland and his mother was born in Tuomikyla. His father immigrated in 1907 and then in 1916, Alt and his mother came to America on the "Hellig Olav". He remained in the United States. His father first settled in Calumet, Michigan, then went to Angora, Minnesota. The people in the community were Finnish, most from the villages of Ilmajoki and Tuomikyla. Alt had three sisters and one brother. He helped on the family farm and worked with his father at a sawmill. At the age of nineteen he worked in a cooperative store. Alt took a cooperative course in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1925 and then moved to Wisconsin in 1926. After his father's death in 1928, Alt's mother operated the farm with her children. In 1929, Alt married Elise Nurmi. In 1941, he moved to Chicago, Illinois and started work at a meat packing company. Four years later he returned to Angora. He then moved to Los Angeles, California. He later returned to Angora.**Autobiography in English.
