HISTORICAL SKETCH
Onni Kaartinen, a second generation Finnish American, was an activist and leader in the Finnish American Communist movement in the 1930s and 1940s. From 1937 to 1943 he seved as national secretary of the Finnish American Mutual Aid Society, the Finnish Affiliate of the International Workers Order. In the 1940s he also served as editor of the Tyomies in Superior, Wis. and Eteenpain in New York City. He was active in the cultural life, especially the theater, of the New York City Finnish Labor Temple, the 126th St. Finnish Communist hall.
