Abstract

Hakala's papers consist of the resource materials she used in writing "Memento of Finland: A Musical Legacy". Included are taped interviews (e.g. with Marjorie Edgar and Simon Sorvari), transcribed summaries of taped interviews, biographies of kantele players such as Arvi Manninen, John Stark, Katri Oksanen, and John Huhtala, and kantele builders as well as other folk musicians, e.g. a zither player Marja Johnson, photographs and negatives, a video recording of pianist Emily Jusola, sheet music, correspondence, draft copies of two research papers ("The Kantele Tradition in North America" and "Songs from Metsola: The Finnish Folk Song Collection of Marjorie Edgar"), a tape cassette recording of Koivun Kaiku's 1992 release "Songs from Metsola", and indexes to the collection. Included is also a box of research materials for Hakala's book "The Rowan Tree: The Lifework of Marjorie Edgar" (St. Paul, 2007).

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Joyce Hakala is a leading authority on the kantele, the national instrument of Finland, and its use by Finnish immigrants. She is also director of Koivun Kaiku, one of the best known kantele ensembles in North America.
