HISTORICAL SKETCH

Edmund J Martin 13.01.1910 Pärnu, Estonia – 18. 09.2003 Nassau, New YorkBorn as a merchant's son, studied in Pärnu Gymnasium (Pärnu Poeglaste Gümnaasium), later studied economics in the University of Vienna and graduated the Vienna Film School as a film director. Worked in film production companies in Vienna and Berlin, the returned to Estonia and became the production manager in Estonian Culture Film. Later he returned to Vienna, where he also participated in the activities of the Vienna Estonian Society and helped the Estonian refugees during WWII. 1952 moved to USA, studied to be a designer and opened his own studio „Scandis Designers“. Archive consists of 12 folders.

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
