HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Select Committee to Investigate the Incorporation of the Baltic States into the USSR, also known as the Kersten Committee after its chairman, Rep. Charles J. Kersten, was established in 1953 to investigate the forced incorporation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the Soviet Union. The committee interviewed about 100 people and published the following results in 1954: the Baltic states were violently and unlawfully incorporated into the Soviet Union, the annexation was declared illegal.
