HISTORICAL SKETCH

USA First Synod of Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK USA Esimene Praostkond), chaired by Reverend Thomas Vaga, was formed on the 16th of December in 1953, and it presides over the following congregations: Baltimore St. Mark, Bergen County, Buffalo St. Paul, Chicago St. Paul, Cleveland-Ohio, Connecticut, Indianapolis, Lakewood Holy Ghost, Los Angeles, New York St. Paul, Paterson St. Paul, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, South Florida St. Paul. The First Synod had 2399 members in 1955, 1006 members in 2007. In 2013 USA First Synod and USA Chicago Synod were joined to create one USA Synod of Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), the BaltherNet non-profit network, and the IHRC Archives in May 2014. Birgit Nurme and Pille Aguraiuja of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
