HISTORICAL SKETCH

Anthony Zaffiro (1887-1962) was born in Santo Sefano Di Camastra, Sicily, and came to the United States with his family at the age of seventeen. Zaffiro settled in Reading, Pa., where he worked as a machine operator, opened a grocery store, and finally established a real estate and travel agency business. He often acted as a court interpreter and sponsored many applicants for U.S. citizenship. In 1929, he was appointed First Ward Alderman and he served in that capacity for 32 years. In 1909, Zaffiro founded the OSIA Reading Lodge No. 29, the first OSIA chapter in Pennsylvania. He served as the state lodge Grand Treasurer, as Grand Orator, and as Assistant Grand Venerable.
