HISTORICAL SKETCH

Laamann, Paul (also Laaman, also Paul-Georg)11.01.1893 Tartu, Estonia – 25.01.1946Military man, captain.Studied in the University of Tartu from 1912. During WWI graduated from Vladimir military school in St. Petersburg, Russia. Participated in WWI, fought in the Russian Army. 28.11.1918 – 17.12 1918 commander of the 1st infantry regiment's 7th company in the Estonian War of Independence. 7.01.1919 – 9.08.1919 commander of the narrow-gauge armored train no 2. Commander of the Defense League Võru unit. One of the founding members of the Estonian League of Freedom Fighters (Vaps Movement). In WWII fought in the German army against Soviet Union. In September 1944 was involved in admiral Johan Pitka's attempt to restore Estonia's independence. Was Johan Pitka's last aide. Was arrested by the Soviets on 22.10.1944, 15.11.1945 was sentenced to death. PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
