HISTORICAL SKETCH

29.08.1919 Petrograd, Russia – 15.02.1989 Laurel, MD, USA Teacher. Graduated from Valga Gymnasium in Estonia, studied singing in Tartu Music School. In 1941 graduated from Tartu Teacher´s Seminar (Tartu Õpetajate Seminar). 1941-1944 was a teacher in Kuigatsi elementary school. 1944 emigrated to Germany, in 1950 to USA. From 1951 worked in YWCA International Center, from 1971 was the head of YWCA International Center. Was a teacher in Baltimore Estonian School, the headmaster for 4 years. Member of Baltimore Saint Mark's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, member of Baltimore Estonian Funeral Fund, participated in the activities of Baltimore Estonian Theatre, was active in Baltimore Estonian Female Choir, co-worker at the Baltimore Estonian Society Newsletter "Bülletään". From 1952 the head of Girl Scout Center. Head secretary of ESTO (Estonian World Festival) ´76 organizing committee. Member of Baltimore Estonian Society, 1985-1989 its chairwoman. Husband: Voldemar Liiv. Married 1950. Daughter: Tiina Ets Son: Martin

Awards: Americanism Medal from the female organization Daughters of the American Revolution for successful work in the YWCA International Centre (1989).

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
