HISTORICAL SKETCH

1895-17.03.1985 Chicago, USABorn in Ilmjärve, Tartumaa, Estonia.Fled to Finland in 1941 and was sent back to Estonia where the German occupation forces arrested and imprisoned him. He was released in 1944, emigrated to Germany and in 1950 to the USA.Wife: Anna Kasak (Hansen, married in 1926). He received degrees from the Teachers College in Tartu in 1916 and the Alexey Military Academy in Moscow in 1917. As a young officer in the Russian Imperial Army he fought in the WWI. He returned to Estonia in 1918, entered in the newly organized Estonian army and fought in the Estonian War of Independence. After the war he remained in the army. He graduated from the Tondi Military Academy in Tallinn 1926, was promoted to the rank of major in 1928 and of colonel in 1934.In 1934 he accepted a leading position in the Ministry of Transportation where he worked until June 1928, 1940 when the Soviet Union occupied Estonia

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2009. Gristel Ramler and Birgit Nurme of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
