HISTORICAL SKETCH

EELK (Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church) Bergen County Congregation (first known as Teaneck Ev. Lutheran Church of St. Mattheus) was founded by reverend Conrad Klemmer on March 18, 1929. Conrad Klemmer was born in Estonia in 1882 and arrived in the US in 1906. Aleksander Metz was elected as the chairman of the Church Council. In 1956, after the death of pastor Klemmer, the congregation was reorganized and incorporated and Max Saar was elected as the resident pastor. Reverend Saar was succeeded by Elmar Kuusler in 1981, Rudolf Reinaru in 1986 and Thomas Vaga in 1993. Aksel Lehtmäe was appointed as the chairman of the council in the same year. Services have been held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bogota, New Jersey which was built in 1920 with the help of local Estonians.

PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), the BaltherNet non-profit network, and the IHRC Archives in May 2014. Birgit Nurme and Pille Aguraiuja of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
