HISTORICAL SKETCH

May 21st 1900 Rõuge parish, Võrumaa, Estonia – December 29 1984 Montreal, Canada1927 graduated from Estonian Higher Military School special course as an army engineer, 1927-1929 studied army engineering in France. 1931-1933 studied law in University of Tartu. 1931-1938 Estonian Higher Military School, lecturer. Was the chief of engineering in the Estonian Army, from 1940 major. Kõiv was mobilized to the Red Army in 1941, but he returned to Estonia and served in the German Army. 1944-1954 lived in Sweden. 1947-1953 worked in Uppsala University Hospital as an engineer and scientist. Worked alongside Nobel prize winner, professor A. Tiselius. In 1954 moved to Canada. 1954-1974 worked as a researcher in Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Montreal, Canada.1974-1979 Montreal Clinical Research Institute, head of department. Institute's audio-visual laboratory is named in Kõiv's honor - Erich Kõiv Audio-Visual Centre. Kõiv has been a lecturer on many international conferences in the U.S, London, Paris, Oslo and Munich.Kõiv has been a member of many organizations: Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church St. John's Congregation in Montreal, council member. PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
