HISTORICAL SKETCH

06. May 1926 Tallinn, Estonia -Engineer, construction engineer.Graduated from Tallinn Nõmme Gymnasium (Tallinnas Nõmme Gümnaasium) in 1944. Mobilized to the German army, was imprisoned by the Russian army in the „Czech Hell“, escaped to the American zone in Germany. In 1949 went to USA.Laan studied in Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Munich Technical University in Germany, also studied construction science in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in USA. B. S from Tuftsi University (USA), 1951 MS degree in engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, master’s thesis: “Feasibility of direct shear tests on cohesive soils”. 1951 – 1984 worked in Los Angeles Fluor Corporation, specializing in construction problems of oil refineries, chemical factories, ports etc. Active member of society. Board member of the program „Seagate“ (Merevärav, sending aid packages to Estonia), council member of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church's Los Angeles Congregation. From 1948 a member of fraternity Rotalia (korp! Rotalia), board member and chairman of the Los Angeles Estonian Society. Member of the folk dance group „Kirikasukas“, from 1966 board member and from 1990 chairman of the Los Angeles Estonian House, camp leader of the boy scout unit „Tulehoidjad“ etc.Laan has belonged to many organizations: American Society of Civil Engineers, Governor's Survey on Efficiency and Cost Control Committee (USA), Sigma XI Research Society (USA), Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (USA), chambers of engineers in Louisiana, Ohio, Washington, Illinois, Maine and Alaska. PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
